Australian Broadband Survey 2009

This
2009 Australian Broadband Survey was run for a month in January 2010. It was an open survey conducted by
Whirlpool.net.au. It is important o npte that the results are not normalised - the majority of the 23,683 respondants were opinion leaders and informed consumers.
To quote the survey report, "The group surveyed are more likely to be advising friends, family and co-workers on which ISP to join. Broadband service providers should pay close attention to this demographic, as their influence wields significant impact."
Highlights of the report include:
Internet Filtering
- Over 90% of respondants do not support mandatory internet filtering.
- Internet users believe the priority for the Government in terms of internet safety should be:
1. Educating parents (83%)
2. Educating children (65%)
3. Mandatory filtering (3%)
- 84% of users believed they knew how to sidestep any mandatory filtering.
- 44% of users consider mandatory filtering would affect their voting in the next Federal election.
Broadband Marketplace
- 53% believe that broadband value has not improved in the last 12 months.
Wireless
- 49% of respondants have a WiFi enabled laptop as a secondary computer.
- 63% don't see 3G wireless broadband as a viable replacement for home internet access.
Broadband Use
- Fast internet surfing and faster downloads are the most important factors in having broadband (85%).
- 90% of connections have more than one computer attached to them.
- 65% are achieving access speeds of greater than 5Mbit/s.
ISPs
- The top three reasons that respondants left their previous ISP were:
1. Prices were too high
2. Download limits too low
3. Moved residence
- The top three reasons that would entice respondants to change ISP are:
1. Lower prices
2. Higher download limit
3. Faster connection speeds
