Chiko Accidental Alien

Background: Unique Interactive Broadband Initiative

Australian Film Commission (AFC) and Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) exemplify the push for Broadband content in Australia by launching an online animated and interactive children's game at ABC Online (abc.net.au/chiko).

Alpha Salmon was commissioned as the technology partner by Indigo Digital to collaborate with animation company Funnyazhell, illustration artist Nathan Jurevicius, script writer Stu Connolly and producer Stephane Zerbib to develop the project utilising state of the art Flash technology.

Solution: An online animated and interactive graphic adventure for children

Alpha Salmon assisted Indigo Digital in the development of ideas for the main episodic adventure as well as driving the concept of mini games to entice target users and provide hours worth of game play online.

The mini games aimed to be simplistic and familiar whilst being extremely engaging and challenging. Alpha Salmon and Indigo Digital completed a total of twelve (12) mini games from concept and prototyping without animation through to development and execution. Each mini game was play tested and tweaked to the optimum level to strike the right balance between challenge and fun.

Another component of this innovative development is the overall narrative of the adventure game. The core engine was built to allow for future episodic expansion as well as multi language support. The main adventure game consists of over 40 minutes of animation and audio. The challenge was to ensure that the target users attain a different experience each time they play. To achieve the non-linear nature of the game, alternate audio for character interactions also played a big part of ensuring the content stayed fresh as the players achieve certain goals within the game.
